Mission
Quality healthcare, offered as ministry
Kendu Adventist Hospital describes itself as a 170-bed Christian hospital committed to disciple people through quality healthcare. The line the hospital uses is compassionate care, healing hearts.
About the hospital
Kendu Adventist Hospital is the oldest Adventist medical facility in Kenya. It stands a short distance from the shores of Lake Victoria.
Early years
The hospital was founded in 1925 under the East African Union of Seventh-day Adventists. Dr. George A. S. Madgwick was appointed the first medical director and served for 15 years. The first two nurses were Karen Nielsen and Carentze Olsen, who had served at Skodsborg Sanatorium in Denmark before coming to Kendu. Both served here for 25 years.
About twenty medical directors followed Dr. Madgwick. Two served more than one term: Dr. B. E. Amundsen (1950–1953 and 1954–1956) and Dr. E. C. Kraft (1971–1979, 1985–1988, and 1989–1990). The hospital is now under the West Kenya Union Conference.
